The bacteria that cause impetigo are not easy to kill without antibiotics, and sometimes, it can be caused by antibiotic-resistant staph, so this is not something to take lightly.

If you want to use a home remedy, here’s what the Mayo clinic recommends:

- Soak the affected areas of skin with a vinegar solution — 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to 1 pint of water — for 20 minutes. This makes it easier to gently remove the scabs.

- After washing the area, apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment three or four times daily. Wash the skin before each application, and pat it dry.

If this were me, i would follow the Mayo advice, but also apply povidone iodine solution after the vinegar to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria, but iodine can really sting, and it might be a little too painful for a child. Without povidone iodine, i would go to the doc.

Don’t try any "natural" cures. Impetigo is a staph infection and the best cure is an antibacterial cream such as Bactroban. I would get your child to the doctor as soon as possible because he can spread it to his friends.
